BORIS DORFMAN
Joseph Burg was born in a Hassid family in the small town of Vizhnitsa in Austria-Hungary on the eve of WWI. His father floated timber on rafts along Carpathian rivers. Joseph went to heder, yeshiva, gymnasium. He described the events of 1939 - annexation of Austria by Germany and situation with Jew at that period - in Hebrew in the book "Poison". To 60th birthday anniversary of poet Yury Kaplan. Yury Kaplan started a sort of quietly but, as critics have correctly noticed, he was immediately heard by those who can and know to hear. "Yury Kaplan has single and purposeful verses which create a good live book", - his tutor Nikolai Ushakov wrote trying to promote this "live book" stuck in the labyrinths of censorship. Once this building bore another plaque - in memory of the brother of "great chief" and an ardent revolutionary who had stayed for some time in Odessa. Over long years nobody could even dream the time would come and the plaque on the Malaya Arnautskaya street 9 will be substituted by another one commemorating a great Jewish poet Haim-Nakhman Byalik. |
