SYNAGOGUE RECONSTRUCTION

Facade of the synagogue in PodilThe Kiev Jewish Religious Community has started renovation of its synagogue in Podol. Under the Soviet rule, this synagogue was the only one functioning as the spiritual center of the Kiev Jews.

In the year 5656 according to the Jewish calendar (1895), a permanent synagogue building was for the first time constructed in Kiev thanks to Gabriel-Yakov Rozenberg. In the beginning of the 20th century, Vladimir Goratsievich Gintsburg took over it, and with his support the building was enlarged in 1916: a special gallery for women was added to it.

On April 8, 1929, the presidium of the Kiev city council decided to "...close down the synagogue of Rozenberg and transfer its building to the club of handicraftsmen of Petrovsky district".

Fragments of the reconstruction planThe fascist occupation was the greatest tragedy of the Kiev Jewry. Nobody can count how many people from the congregation of Rozenberg's synagogue were killed in Babiy Yar.

Although the old building has been defiled by the fascists (horses were kept there), it lived through those terrible days.

Soon after the liberation of Kiev the building on 29, Schekavitska Street became a synagogue once again. In 1990 Yaakov Dov Bleich took over the office of the Rabbi of the Kiev Jewish Community, Chief Rabbi of Kiev and Ukraine. Many traditions were resumed in our city. In August 1990 the first in many years legal circumcision was held in the synagogue. A yeshiva opened under the synagogue, while the Rabbi helped much towards the opening of Jewish gymnasiums for boys and girls. On March 4, 1992, the president of Ukraine signed a decree on restitution of religious objects to religious organizations. Thus, the Jewish Religious Community feels totally in control of its own synagogue building.
